Saturday Classics – 30012021

70-luvun alku oli musiikillisesti aika riemastuttavaa aikaa näin jälkikäteen katseltuna. Sieltä on popsahtanut kaikkea hauskaa, taisi olla varsinainen pop-musiikin testilaboratorio. Päivän biisi kolahtaa tuohon ajankohtaan, tarkemmin sanottuna vuoteen 1973 jolloin Hollantilainen Golden Earring julkaisi päivän klassikkona soivan ’Radar Love’ biisin ja sinkosivat maailman laajuiseen kuuluisuuteen. Bändi soittelee edelleen, ovat soitelleet vuodesta 1961.

Early 70’s was like a test laboratory for the pop music, at least it seems like. Lots of fun and enjoyable songs emerged from that era, like today’s classic from a Dutch group Golden Earring. They released ’Radar Love’ at 1973 and rocketed to world fame with it. The band is still playing, ever since 1961.

Saturday Classics – 23012021

Tom Waitsin roheaa lauluääni lumoaa tässä upeassa biisissä. ‘Downtown Train‘ on vuodelta 1985 ja se löytyy ‘Rain Dogs‘ -albumilta. Videolla esiintyy muuten nyrkkeilijä Jake LaMotta. Kappaleen teki suurelle yleisölle tunnetuksi Rod Steward omalla versiollaan vuonna 1989, taisi jopa kivuta todella korkealle listoilla. Pidän molemmista versioista, joten soitetaan molemmat.

Tom Waits‘ rough voice enchants in this beautiful song he wrote and sand for his ‘Rain Dogs‘ album. ‘Downtown train‘ was released at 1985. In this video you can see the boxer Jake LaMotta playing a role. Rod Steward made this song famous at 1989 with his cover and reached at number three at the Billboard 100 Chart. I like both versions, so lets play them both.

Saturday Classics – 16012021

Tiistaina kuulimme suru-uutisen bloggaajaystävä Timon puolison Tarjan nukkumisesta pois sairauden murtamana. Päivän kappale omistetaan Tarjan muistolle, kehen minulla oli ilo tutustua viime kesänä. Lyhyen kohtaamisen muistoksi kuullaan tänään Michael Jacksonin esittämä ’Gone Too Soon’. Laulun tekijöitä ovat Larry Grossman ja Buz Kohan ja se on julkaistu Jacksonin ’Dangerous’ albumilla vuonna 1991. Tarja ei itse osallistunut klassikoiden soitteluun, mutta kuunteli lauantaisin kappaleemme ja toisinaan mukavasti kuulimme hänen kommenttinsa kappaleista.

This week we heard the sad news about a blogging friend’s spouse’s passing away. Today we’ll be listening ’Gone Too Soon’ in memory of Tarja, whom I had a peasure to meet last summer. The song is performed by Michael Jackson and it is written by Larry Grossman ja Buz Kohan. It was released at the Jackson’s ’Dangerous’ album at 1991. Tarja didn’t take a part in Saturday Classics but I know she listened the songs we played on Saturdays.

Saturday Classics – 09012021

Joskus biisit kehittyvät matkan varrella, kuten päivän klassikona soiva ‘Statesboro Blues’. Alkuperäinen sävellys on jo vuodelta 1928 ja se on Blind Willie McTell:n käsialaa. Vuonna 1967 bluesmies Taj Mahal teki siitä oman versionsa. Tästä intoutuneena The Allman Brothers Band teki vuonna 1971 oman versionsa, joka soi tänään klassikkona. The Allman Brothersien versio on rankattu  Rolling Stone lehden “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time” -listalla sijalle yhdeksän.

Sometimes songs grow better along the path, as it happened for today’s classic. This old blues song was written and recorded by Blind Willie McTell as early as 1928. At 1967 Taj Mahal made his own, updated version of the song. Few years later The Allman Brothers Band made their version based on Taj Mahal’s version and the rest is history. The Allman Brothers Band’s version of the ‘Statesboro Blues‘ is ranked as the ninth best guitar song by Rolling Stone at their “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time“.

Päivän kääntyessä iltaan klassikoksi sopii Bob Segerin ja Silver Bullet Band:n ’Night Moves’ vuoden 1976 saman nimiseltä albumilta.
