Pelto alkaa olla paketissa ja sato korjattu talteen. Kuivan kesän sato jäi joiltain osin vaatimattomaksi, joiltain osin oli runsastakin. Porkkanat jäivät pieniksi, mutta papuja tuli runsaasti. Voin siis olla hyvin tyytyväinen. Talven yli jätin uutta kasvukautta odottamaan tämän vuoden uuden kokeilun, juuripersiljan.

The vegetable lot is ready for the winter. This summer’s drought resulted a bit less crop than the previous year in some species, some gave plenty to harvest. Carrots were quite small but beans grew in full. I’m happy about this years crop. Left some Hamburg Root Parsley (Petroselinum crispum subsp. tuberosum) there over winter.

Kasvimaa draamaa / A Drama at the Vegetable Lot

Viikonloppuna käydessäni kasvimaalla paljastui kauhistuksien kauhistus; jänis oli päässyt herkuttelemaan pavun varsilla! Välipalaksi on näykkäisty pari porkkanan vartta ja mangoldin lehteä. Onneksi olivat jättäneet papuihin kukat, joten toivoa on vielä pienestä sadosta. Loppusadon pelastamiseksi piti ryhtyä vastaiskuun.

Last weekend went to see how things are at the vegetable lot and a terrible set back had occurred! A rabbit had visited the lot and enjoyed the green beans’ leaves and stems. Some snacking were done in the carrots’ and chards’ stems as well. For some reason they didn’t like the pea’s flowers, so there is a small change to get some crop out of those eaten ones. To save the rest of the crop I had to begun hit back.

– Viritin harsoista teltan papujen päälle / Covered the peans with a gauze –

Toivottavasti jänikset älyävät nyt pysyä pois! Olin niin ylpeä tuosta papujen kasvusta, niin tämä oli kamala takaisku. Harsolla teltattaminen ei ehkä kuitenkaan ollut niin hyvä ratkaisu kuin hätäpäissäni luulin, jälkikäteen on tullut mieleen että nehän saattaa hometta kerätä siellä harson alla. 

Hope the hares will stay away now. I was so proud about those peans growing so well, so this was a real bad set back for now. I’m not sure if the gauze was a good idea so late in the summer, it might gather some mildew underneath. 

Social distancing – Day 99

Lämpöä alkaa olla sen verran mukavasti, että tällainen vilukissakin tarkenee. Jyväskylään tänään hurauttaessani siellä oli vastassa oikein mukavat lukemat.

The weather in Finland is getting really nice for someone like me who’s always feeling cold. Drove up to Jyväskylä today and there were very nice welcoming temperatures.

Päivän jännitysmomentti oli, että vieläkö kasvimaalla on mitään hengissä ja kuten kuvasta näkyy pavut ovat ainakin itäneet varsin hyvin. Kyllä musta vielä viljelijä tulee! Kaikin puolin siellä oli kaikki hyvin, kastelinhan todella runsaasti ennen juhannusta ja maassa oli harsojen alla vieläkin kosteutta. Pari penkkiä siellä on sen näköistä josko niistä mitään tulee, mutta niitä en ole tarkoituksella kastellut lainkaan. Kylvinkin ne vasta ihan viimeisessä satsissa, joten aika näyttää miten käy. 

I was a bit worried if there was anything alive at the vegetable lot after almost a week’s absence, but as you can see the beans have germinated quite nicely. I will be a grower one of these days! Over all everything was fine there. I wasn’t too worried because I watered really well before Midsummer and the covers help keep the soil moist. There are couple of beds that doesn’t show much yet, but I haven’t watered them at all in purpose. I want to see if they start to grow when the rain comes.

Social distancing – Day 85

Auringonpaistetta pilveettömältä taivavalta ja lämmintä. Mitä sitä voi ihminen enää pyytää! Kaikki kylvöhommat tulivat tänään valmiiksi ja huomenna on luvassa kesäkurpitsantaimien metsästystä ja viimeiset istutukset. Sellainen olo kuin olisin ollut tosi ahkera. Ehkäpä.

Sun is shining, no clouds and warm weather. What can one ask for more! All seedings are done and tomorrow there will be a shopping trip to a nursery for some zucchini plants. I feel like very diligent person.

Social distancing – Day 68

Aamulla heräsin hyvissä ajoin ja suuntasin takaisin pellolle kylvötöihin ilman sen kummempia kolotuksia tai jäykistyneitä jäseniä (pieni ihme). Porkkanan siementä meni maahan irtosiemenenä ja nauhassa. Keltaisista porkkanoista on tullut viime vuosina meidän suosikkeja, joten niitä kylvin enemmän kuin perinteisiä oransseja. Maahan pääsi myös raitapunajuuri, valkosipulit ja vähän pinaattia. Siinä oli vain neljä penkkiä, miten ihmeessä mä saan sen palstan täyteen. No, se jää mietittäväksi kahden viikon päähän. Rankka päivä tämäkin pitsiharsojen, käytävämattojen ja kasteluiden kanssa. Nämä paikalliset äidin ystävät muuten syöttävät minua täällä kilpaa niin ruuan määrässä kuin laadussa. Ihania ovat!

Woke up this morning without any aches from yesterday’s shoveling. Went pack to the vegetable lot early in the morning to work some more. I seeded carrots, yellow and orange, beetroot, spinach and garlic. The yellow carrot has become our favourite, so I seeded it more than the regular orange. Hard day this one was also with setting the covers for the plants and pathways, and of course the watering. Now they’ll have to survive on their own for two weeks, let’s hope for some rain. Mom’s friends feed me here like if they were in a competition between themselves who does more and better food. Oh, they’re so lovely!

Social distancing – Day 67

Päivä meni pellolla huhkiessa ja sen verran sain valmista, että aamulla pääsee kylvöhommiin. Sillä edellytyksellä että jos sattuu pääsemään sängystä ylös. Toki venyttelin, mutta aika lailla kolottaa selkäpuolelle. No, sellaiset pienet kolotukset unohtuu nopeasti kun siellä on niin mukava möyriä. Olen kaivannut jotain tällaista kunnollista fyysistä tekemistä tässä etätyöskentelyn aikaan. Nyt sitä sitten saa roppakaupalla 😀

The day passed quickly while creating seedbeds and managed so well that I can do some seeding in the morning. If I’m able to get out of bed that is. I did some proper stretching afterwards, but the bag is a bit stiff. It will go by fast when there is something fun to do. I’ve missed this kind of physical work during this distance teaching period. Now I got it, may a bit too much at a time 😀

Social distancing – Day 65

Päätin viettää pitkän viikonlopun ja vaihdoin kaupunkia. Viikonlopun puuhana olisi pistää maa viljavaksi, siltä osin kuin nyt vielä kannattaa laittaa. Maa on vielä kylmää ja kaikkiin kylvötöihin ei vielä kannata ryhtyä. Nyt kun muori on saikulla, niin viljelypalstan kevättyöt jäivät minun vastuulle. Vihannesten viljely on ollut muorin harrastus vuosikymmeniä ja minä olen vain autellut silloin tällöin, joten vähän jännittää miten käy.

I’ve decided to take a long weekend and changed scenery. The task for the weekend is to make the land fertile, as much as it is possible so early in the spring. The ground is still cold and it’s not smart to seed all that I’m planning to. Since mom is off duty for the moment the responsibility of the spring activities lies on my shoulders. The vegetable plot has been her hobby for the past thirty years or so, I’ve only helped every now and then. I’m bit nervous how it will crow.
