Saturday Classics – 23122023

Joululaulujen klassikko uudella twistillä. ‘The Little Drummer Boy‘ For King & Country -yhtyeen live-esityksenä. Tämän kanssa on hyvä laskeutua Jouluun. Laulu on alun perin vuodelta 1941 ja sen on säveltänyt Katherine Kennicott Davis.

A Christmas classic from 1941 have been renewed by For King & Country -band. Here is their wonderful live performance of this Katherine Kennicott Davies song. This one brings us nicely down to Christmas spirit.

Finland 106

Suomi täyttää 106 vuotta tänään napakassa pakkasessa, ainakin täällä idässä. Maisema on kaunis, puut huurteessa ja maa valkoisena. Hyvä päivä juhlia itsenäisyyttä.

Finland celebrates 106 years of independence today in frisky freezing weather, least at here in the south-east corner. Landscape decorated itself in pure white for the occasion. Good day to celebrate independence.

Elliott’s photos

Yksi suurista valokuvaajista, Elliott Erwitt nukkui pois keskiviikkona 29.11.2023 kunniakkaassa 95 vuoden iässä. Elliott Erwit teki ansiokkaan päivätyön valokuvaajana ja useat hänen kuvistaan ovat maailmanlaajuisesti tunnettuja. Hänen töistään löytyy tarkkanäköistä arjen komediaa, hienoja kuvia elokuvatähdistä ja poliitikoista sekä paljon koiria. Olen aina ihastellut Erwittin taidokkuutta nähdä asioita ja yksinkertaistaa ne herkällä silmällä. Pari vuotta sitten tuli dokumentti hänen työskentelystään nimeltä ‘Silence Sounds Good‘. Parhaiten hänen töihinsä pääsee kuitenkin syventymään on tutkimalla lukuisia kirjoja hänen töistään. Ohessa pieni video hänen töistään ja ajatuksistaan.

One of the great photographers of time, Elliott Erwitt, passed away last Wednesday, the 29th of November, at the age of 95. Mr Erwitt worked as a photographer through his life and so many of his photos are world famous. His work is full of everyday comedy, wonderful shots of film stars and politicians and lots of dogs. I’ve always been a great fan of his work and admired his way of seeing this world and documenting it with subtly and great integrity. There is a document of his work called ‘Silence Sounds Good‘. Best way to study his photographs are through books made from his work. Here’s a little video about his ideas and works.

Marraskuu koputtelee / November is Knocking again

Marraskuu se sieltä taasen kolkuttelee ja oikein römpsäkkäästi tuo tuolta päälle tulee talven ensimmäisen myrskyn ja lumen myötä. Ritva ehdotti tämän vuoden  marraskuun selätyksen teemaksi ruokaa, joten mennään sillä. Rennolla otteella kuitenkin ettei tarvitse mitään hienoja aterioita alkaa väsäämään, vaan tyyliin jotain suuhun pantavaa/syötävää. Linkitys aukeaa keskiyöllä ja sehän on perinteisesti tuossa sivupalkissa. Nautitaan tästä marraskuusta hyvien makujen parissa!

November is coming again and with a bad storm, snow and freezing roads. Ritva suggested ‘Food’ as this years theme for the How to Survive November. We’ll go with that with a relaxed touch as ‘Something to Eat’, not fancy cooking. InLinkz opens at midnight and it’s at the right column. Let’s enjoy this November with marvelous flavors!

Saturday Classics – 07102023

Bändi on klassikko, mutta biisi on uusi. The Rolling Stonesilta on tulossa uusi albumi, ‘Hacney Diamonds‘, muutaman päivän kuluttua ja jotenkin vain tämä ‘Sweet Sounds of Heaven’ jäi soimaan päähän. Ammattilaiset osaa ja kun mukana on höysteenä vielä Lady Gaga ja Stevie Wonder niin kelpaahan tätä kuunnella. Olin jo heittänyt pyyhkeen kehään Rollareiden suhteen, mutta tämä kyllä virkisti.

A new song from a classic band; The Rolling Stones released ‘Sweet Sounds of Heaven‘ in September from their up coming album ‘Hackney Diamonds‘. The song plays in my dead constantly, that’s the reason to play it here today. Jagger and Richards know the recipe for a good song and if there is Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder featured in a song you can just listen and enjoy.

Intiaanikesä / Indian Summer

Ollaan saatu nautiskella pitkästä ja lämpimästä syksystä. Kesän oloa koettiin eilen Saimaan rannoilla lämpötilan kivutessa +22 asteeseen. Päivän biiseiksi valikoitui kavalkadi ‘Indian Summer’ -biisejä. Näitä löytyy kyllä lisää tuubista, mutta tänään nämä kolme.

We have been enjoying long and warm autumn. There were almost summer feelings at the beach yesterday as the temperature reached +22 C. I took a nice stroll at the forest and the beach and enjoyed some sausages at the fire place. Perfect day.

Saturday Classics – 09092023

Kuunnellaanpa tänään Elvis Costelloa, joka esiintyy tänään Helsingin Kulttuuritalolla ja kuinkas sattuikaan että minulla on liput sinne. Costellon ns. suurin hitti on ollut tämä ‘Veronica‘ vuodelta 1989. Biisi on kirjoitettu yhteistyössä Paul McCartneyn kanssa, herrat vuorottelivat tuolloin toistensa albumeilla. Paul laulaa myös taustoja. ‘Veronica’ on koskettava tarina dementiasta, muistin menetyksestä ja Costellon mummista.

Today Elvis Costello will be performing in Helsinki and I’ve got first row tickets to the concert. Costello’s biggest hit is ‘Veronica‘, a touching story about his grandmother and slowly losing your memory to dementia. The song is written with Paul McCartney at 1989 and you can hear his voice at the backups.
